This is our last newsletter of the year and we are filled with gratitude. Thank you for making our first year in business (nearly) a success. We could not have done it without you and we look forward to seeing what 2017 has in store! We hope that you have a wonderful holiday season and get some time to nourish and honour your body in a way it deserves. Rest, relax and be merry!

Client Spotlight - Meet Sharon



Q: Tell us a little about yourself e.g. what you do for work and play.

A: I am from the UK and have lived in Kerikeri for 18 years.  I am a solicitor and work at Palmer Macauley in its property/commercial department.  I have two boys, Joe who is 20 and currently surf instructing in Byron Bay and Hamish who has just graduated from Mt Aspiring College and is heading down to Otago University with his brother next year!  When not being a mother and solicitor, I am with my horse or thinking of my horse.  I bought PJ in April after completing a round of radiotherapy for a second attack

of breast cancer.  He was my reward and as soon as my broken arm mends (don't ask) we will resume our training.  I particularly enjoy eventing but PJ and I are yet to get out there and do it!


Q: What made you decide to join Aligned Movement?


A combination of things; my mobility after surgery was limited and I wanted to work with Alyssa to resume movement without causing any harm.  


Correct posture and body awareness is important for our daily lives and great posture is important to all aspects of horse riding - core strength is paramount and I knew that pilates would be the best way to strengthen my core to improve my riding performance and my horse's comfort; 


I love flat stomachs and expect to have one early in the New Year :)


Q: What classes do you take?


A: I usually take the express 45 minutes lunch time classes; Alyssa is great at starting and finishing on time - whilst also providing vocal entertainment - meaning I can accurately and confidently plan around them;  I find these classes calming and l feel mentally and emotionally centered for the time I am there.  Alyssa and I both enjoy Mindfulness and this form of exercise allows you to freely go within whilst working hard on the body.  I have done one circuit class which I loved but soon after broke my arm (not during class :)).  I plan to resume those classes as soon as I have the strength to do so.  I enjoyed the intense communal work-out.


Q: Which class is your favourite? Why?


A: 45 minute - Pilates Mat Express for the inward and outward benefits.


Q: How have our classes helped you?


A: Yes - I am far more body aware.  My posture has improved, as well as my breathing.  Alyssa teaches the importance of breath and the correct method.  It sounds as if it should be automatic - but I've been breathing wrongly until recently depriving myself of much needed healing oxygen.


I am a stronger, more confident horse rider and have been getting some great results from my partnership with PJ!


Q: Do you play any sports or partake in other physical activities outside of the studio?


A: Horse riding; walking and cycling.
